Griha Kalesh Nivaran — Why Quarrels Happen at Home, How Peace Returns

Quarrels at home rarely come from one person's fault. Far more often they come from a mismatch of timing and temperament between the people who share a roof. The Kundli Milan Jyotish team explains how astrology reads this, and which simple remedies truly belong to the tradition.

Griha kalesh nivaran begins with naming the cause correctly. In jyotish, peace at home is read from the 4th house, speech and family from the 2nd house, and the mind from the Moon. When two people in a family pass through difficult periods at the same time, or their natures pull in different directions, small things turn into arguments. The remedies are simple: worship of Ganesha, Shiva and Hanuman, a lamp at dusk, meals taken together, and care with words.

Many people type 'grah kalesh kyu hota hai' or 'ghar me kalesh ho to kya kare' into a search bar, hoping for one clear answer. The honest one is this: not every quarrel has a planet behind it. Money worries, exhaustion and a crowded house are real causes too. But when conflict keeps returning without a big reason, or flares up sharply during one phase of life, the birth chart can often show which period is at work and roughly how long it will last. That is what this article explains — without fear, and without blaming anyone.

What griha kalesh means — kalah and kalesh are not the same

"Kalah" means a quarrel: raised voices, an argument, a door shut too hard. "Kalesh" means suffering — the heaviness that stays in the mind long after the argument is over. A kalah lasts a few minutes. A kalesh can last for weeks. So griha kalesh is about the whole atmosphere of a home: silence at the dinner table, people avoiding each other, a sharp edge on every remark.

Jyotish reads this heaviness through three questions:

  1. How do the house of the home (the 4th) and the house of speech (the 2nd) look in the charts of the family members?
  2. What pressure is the Moon, the planet of the mind, under — and where does Mars, the planet of energy and anger, sit?
  3. Whose dasha (the planetary period now running) is heavy, and who is under a difficult transit of Saturn (Saturn's present movement through the sky)?

The first two describe what a person is born with. The third is more like the weather — it arrives and it changes. In most homes, kalesh is tied closely to the third, and that is where hope lies.

Why grah kalesh happens — houses and planets in the chart

With each cause below you will also find what helps. Keep one principle in mind: no single planet decides anything on its own. The whole chart, the drishti (the aspect, or influence, a planet casts on a house) and the strength of the house lord are always read together.

The 4th house — the house of peace at home

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra asks us to read home, happiness, mother, land and vehicles from the 4th house. In everyday language this is the comfort of home — whether the mind settles when you walk back through the door.

When Saturn, Mars or Rahu sit in the 4th house, or cast their aspect on it, strain enters the home easily. Saturn brings a cold distance, Mars brings heated arguments, Rahu brings restlessness and misunderstanding. One more pattern deserves attention: the lord of the 6th house (the house of disputes and opposition) sitting in the 4th, or the lord of the 4th sitting in the 6th. Then outside pressure walks into the home — office anger lands in the kitchen, loan worries land on the children.

Not every malefic (a planet of harsh nature) is read the same way, though. If the 4th house's own lord sits there — Mars in Aries in the 4th for a Capricorn ascendant, for instance — it becomes strength for the home, not conflict. A planet that rules your ascendant, or is the yogakaraka (a specially favourable planet for that ascendant), is also not counted as harsh there.

What helps: Jupiter aspecting the 4th house, or sitting in it, is considered the greatest support a home can have. A clean Venus or Mercury connected to it also brings softness.

The 2nd house — speech and family

The 2nd house rules wealth, speech and kutumba (the family you live with). It shows how much sweetness and how much sharpness a person's words carry.

With Mars, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or the Sun in the 2nd house, speech can turn quick, blunt or bitter — often without any intent to hurt. When Mercury, the significator of speech, is debilitated (in Pisces), combust (weakened by being too close to the Sun), or joined with Mars, Rahu or Ketu, one thing is said and another is heard. When the 6th lord sits in the 2nd, a habit of arguing slips into ordinary conversation.

What helps: worship of Ganesha (for Mercury and speech), a short pause before replying, and a few minutes of silence each day.

The Moon — the planet of the mind

The Moon is the mind, and also the natural significator of the 4th house. When the mind is calm, small things stay small. When it is tired, the same remark stings. These conditions on the Moon deserve attention:

  • Birth near Amavasya (new moon) — a Moon close to the Sun is ksheen, meaning low in light and strength.
  • Saturn (gloom, heaviness), Rahu (unease, suspicion) or Ketu (a mind that withdraws) sitting with the Moon.
  • The aspect of Saturn, Mars or Rahu on the Moon.
  • The Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, or debilitated in Scorpio.

What helps: Jupiter with the Moon, or aspecting it, gives the mind deep support. Among remedies, Shiva puja on Monday and the Moon mantra.

Mars — anger and haste

Mars gives courage and drive. When that drive has nowhere useful to go at home, voices rise and decisions are rushed. Mars casts special aspects on the 4th, 7th and 8th houses counted from itself, so it can touch the house of the home from several places.

It is unfair to label the family member with a strong Mars as simply "short-tempered" — that person also carries the most capacity for work. The energy needs a channel: exercise, a real responsibility, and Hanuman worship on Tuesday.

Saturn — burden, silence and Sade Sati

Saturn is the planet of delay, effort and duty. With Saturn on the 4th house in the birth chart, a home tends to run on work more than words — the love is there, it is just less visible. But Saturn's biggest role in household strain comes through its transit:

  • Sade Sati — Saturn moving through the sign before the natal Moon sign, the Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. About seven and a half years.
  • Kantak Dhaiya — Saturn in the 4th sign from the Moon sign. About two and a half years. The 4th sign is the "home" of the mind, so strain on domestic happiness shows most clearly in this phase.
  • Ashtam Dhaiya — Saturn in the 8th sign from the Moon sign. Work slows down, and irritation can spill over at home.

Saturn does not weigh equally on everyone. For people whose Moon sign is Taurus, Libra, Capricorn or Aquarius, its load is usually considered lighter. The same holds where Saturn is the ascendant lord or a yogakaraka.

What helps: Hanuman Chalisa on Saturday, the Saturn mantra, and a donation of mustard oil or black sesame. And remembering that this is a phase, with a fixed start and a fixed end.

Rahu and Ketu — confusion and distance

Rahu is the planet of illusion. At home it arrives as suspicion: "Why would she say that?" The incident is small, the story in the mind is large. Ketu is the planet of detachment. It causes fewer fights and more distance — someone goes quiet and folds into themselves. The family reads it as sulking, when it is often inner fatigue.

What helps: worship of Durga and the Rahu mantra during Rahu's period; Ganesha puja during Ketu's. And one plain habit — ask before you assume.

Conflict is usually a mismatch of timing, not one person's fault

When a home turns tense, the first instinct is to find a name — "ever since she came into this house…". Jyotish puts a stop to that habit. Several people under one roof are each running their own planetary periods, and friction usually comes from those periods overlapping.

When two people's hard periods coincide

In the Vimshottari dasha system (the method that divides a life into periods ruled by the planets), every person passes through each planet's period in turn. The main periods, or mahadashas, are long — Saturn's lasts 19 years, Rahu's 18. Inside each runs an antardasha (a sub-period) lasting anywhere from a few months to about three years.

Picture an imaginary family. The father is in Rahu's antardasha within Saturn's mahadasha — work pressure and a suspicious mind. The son is under Kantak Dhaiya — restlessness at home. The mother was born with a ksheen Moon — words reach her heart quickly. All three want the best for the family; their heavy moments have simply arrived together. The overlap of time is the cause. When even one period changes, the whole house feels lighter.

Different natures — gana and graha maitri

Each person's birth nakshatra gives a gana (temperament class): Deva (gentle, quick to forgive), Manushya (practical) or Rakshasa (intense, firm in their view — not bad, simply forceful). When Deva and Rakshasa gana live together, one finds the other harsh and the other finds the first slow.

Graha maitri (the friendship between the lords of two people's Moon signs) shows how alike their ways of thinking are. These differences are not faults. Once known, they change how you speak to each other.

Saas and bahu, father and son, brothers — no one person to blame

Society has turned the saas-bahu clash into a stereotype. Jyotish treats this relationship with respect, because relationships too are counted through houses. In a woman's chart the husband is read from the 7th house, and his mother sits 4th from that 7th — the 10th house. In a mother's chart the son is read from the 5th house, and his wife sits 7th from that 5th — the 11th house. The bond has its own place in both charts, so judging it from one chart alone is incomplete.

In the same way, the father is read from the 9th house, younger siblings from the 3rd and elder siblings from the 11th. Every relationship is a bridge between two charts; when the bridge is weak, both banks need looking at.

Signs that the strain is tied to time — and will ease

"Will it always be like this?" In most cases, no. These signs suggest the kalesh belongs to a phase:

  • The home was fine before, and the strain rose sharply from a particular point.
  • Most quarrels circle one family member, who is also under pressure outside — work, sleep, health.
  • The trigger is small, but the reaction is very large.
  • At a festival, or when someone falls ill, everyone comes together again — the closeness has not gone.
  • Someone's Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or an antardasha of Rahu, Saturn or Mars began around the same time.

Planetary time moves like a clock. When the antardasha changes, the mood changes. Saturn changes sign roughly every two and a half years, completing one stage of Dhaiya or Sade Sati. The biggest relief usually comes when the hard periods of the two central people in the home ease together — and that window can be worked out from the charts.

Honesty also requires saying that not all kalesh is planetary. Persistent debt, addiction, or an old injustice need concrete steps: a frank talk about money, mediation by elders, advice from a counsellor. Astrological remedies walk alongside those steps, never in place of them.

Grah kalesh nivaran mantra — which mantra for which cause

Many people search for a 'grah kalesh nivaran mantra' as if one magic formula existed. There is no single one. Different causes call for different mantras. Anyone in the family can chant these. A mantra is never chanted "against" anyone; it is for your own mind and your own home.

Simple rules for japa: 108 times a day (one mala), for at least 43 days without a break, at roughly the same time, in a clean place. Keep a fast only if your health allows. One mantra kept faithfully does more than ten started at once.

Ganesha — for obstacles and speech

'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah'

Ganesha removes obstacles and is linked to Mercury, the planet of speech. When every conversation at home ends in misunderstanding, or constant hurdles make everyone irritable, start here. Offer durva grass on Wednesday. If Mercury is afflicted in someone's chart, they may also chant the Mercury mantra 'Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah'.

Shiva — for a quiet mind

'Om Namah Shivaya'

Shiva wears the Moon on his head, so his worship is traditionally linked to peace of mind. Offer water on a Shivling on Monday; if no temple is near, light a lamp in front of a Shiva image at home and chant there. Worshipping Shiva, Parvati and Ganesha together is a lovely symbol of a united family. Whoever is easily hurt can add the Moon mantra 'Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah'.

Hanuman — for anger and heavy phases

'Om Ham Hanumate Namah'

Under the influence of either Mars or Saturn, Hanuman worship is the simplest support. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa on Tuesday and Saturday — together as a family if you can.

Mantras for Mars, Saturn and Rahu — only when their period is running

'Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah'

'Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaishcharaya Namah'

'Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah'

These seed mantras are for the family member in whose chart that planet is heavy right now — a Mars antardasha, Sade Sati or Dhaiya, or a Rahu period. During Rahu's time, 'Om Dum Durgayai Namah' and a reading of the Durga Kavach are good support as well.

Vishnu — for the elders of the house

'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'

Jupiter is the protector of the home. On Thursday this mantra, or the Vishnu Sahasranama, steadies the minds of the elders — and when the elders are steady, so are the young.

A caution about gemstones: if you wish to wear one, show your full chart to a knowledgeable astrologer first. A gemstone of the very planet you are trying to calm can have the opposite effect.

Remedies for peace at home — a weekly family routine

The most effective form of 'ghar me sukh shanti ke upay' is not a grand ritual but a small routine the whole family keeps together. Treat the table as a suggestion and adjust it to your home.

The dusk lamp and the shared meal

At sunset, one lamp of ghee or sesame oil at the family altar. If possible, two or three family members stand together — a minute of silence, then one mantra. It is a simple tradition of letting go of the day's bitterness at that very moment.

Family is a matter of the 2nd house, and so is food. Eat together at least three times a week, away from phones — and keep complaints away from the meal.

Daan and seva

Daan, or charity, means loosening your own grip. Give the item of whichever planet is heavy, on its day, within your means and without show: rice or milk on Monday (Moon), masoor dal on Tuesday (Mars), green moong on Wednesday (Mercury), chana dal or turmeric on Thursday (Jupiter), mustard oil or black sesame on Saturday (Saturn, Rahu).

Seva, or service, is just as powerful — sitting with the elderly, asking after someone who is ill, putting out water for birds. Service softens the ego, and when the ego softens, arguments shrink on their own.

Remedies for family disputes — small rules for speaking

Of all the remedies for family disputes, half live in mantras and half live on the tongue. These rules are small, but kept daily they do a great deal:

  1. Three deep breaths before replying. Most bitter words leave the mouth in the first two seconds.
  2. Retire two sentences for good: "You always…" and "You never…".
  3. No correcting anyone in front of others; talk privately.
  4. One issue at a time. Do not bring old quarrels into a new argument.
  5. No big topics just before sleep.
  6. If you are wrong, apologise first and explain later.
  7. Never use children as messengers between adults.

How to speak to whom — the element of the Moon sign

The twelve signs fall into four elements. The element of someone's Moon sign shows how they take what is said:

  • Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): their temper flares hot but burns out quickly. Do not feed the flame in that moment; sit down together an hour later.
  • Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practical, clear talk works; surprises do not. Share plans early, and let your actions match what you said.
  • Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): being shut out hurts them more than any argument. Keep the conversation open and lay out your reasoning.
  • Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): a hurtful word lingers in their heart for a long while. Say first that you understand how they feel, then make your point.

If anyone at home is ever hit, or anyone feels afraid, seek help before astrology — police 112, women's helpline 181.

Tradition as tradition — Pitru dosha, Kaal Sarp, Vastu and yantras

Many things are said about household strain. Some come from the classical texts, some from later tradition, and some are only totke (folk tricks). The difference matters.

Pitru dosha belongs to later tradition. It gives this name to certain patterns — the Sun joined with Rahu or Saturn, for instance, or Rahu in the 9th house (the house of father and dharma). Its remedy is just as peaceful: shraddha and tarpan in Pitru Paksha (offering water and food to the ancestors), and food given in their name on Amavasya. It is an act of gratitude to those who came before, not a matter of fear.

Kaal Sarp yoga (all planets on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis) is not found in the ancient hora texts; it is a later tradition. Where it forms, Shiva puja on Nag Panchami is considered enough — no expensive ritual is needed.

Vastu is a separate tradition, not part of the birth chart. Its most useful points are simple: keep the home clean and airy, keep the altar bright, and do not let broken things pile up.

Yantras and totke — the market is full of the "griha kalesh nivaran yantra", gomati chakras, sindoor tucked into pillows and salt in the corners. We do not recommend any of them. They are not jyotish remedies, and they pull attention away from what actually matters — each other. The astrology remedies for family problems are the ones described above: mantra, puja, daan, seva and care with speech.

Why read two family members' charts together — our two matchings

Griha kalesh never shows up fully in one person's chart, because a quarrel always takes two. One chart can show that a person's mind is heavy right now, but not which period of the other person it is colliding with. So the most direct path is to read together the charts of the two people around whom the home's mood is shaped.

Griha Shanti Kundli Milan — any two members of the family

Parents and a son, two brothers, husband and wife, two sisters-in-law — any two people. From both people's date, time and place of birth, this matching reads:

  • How their natures match — gana, graha maitri, bhakoot (emotional closeness from the distance between Moon signs) and tara (each one's wellbeing from the nakshatras).
  • Both Moons — whose mind is under what pressure, and whether Jupiter supports it.
  • The 4th house (peace at home) and the 2nd house (speech).
  • Pitru dosha and Kaal Sarp — presented as tradition, and labelled clearly.
  • The current dasha and Saturn's transit — whose hard period lasts until when.
  • Which remedy each person does and on which day, along with a way of speaking to each, drawn from their Moon sign.

This matching gives no score, because a family bond is not a pass-or-fail exam. It shows how many points are fine, how many are mild, and how many need attention.

Saas–Bahu Kundli Milan — 21 points, not 36 gunas

Ashtakoota's 36 gunas belong to matching a bride with a groom before a wedding. For a saas and bahu, four temperament kootas apply — gana, graha maitri, bhakoot and tara — adding up to 21 points. Alongside come both Moons, each one's house in the other's chart (the 10th and 11th), the houses of home and speech, and both women's current dasha and Saturn transit. The report never declares either of them wrong.

What the report gives, and what it does not

After payment, the full result opens on the site right away. The full report comes as a PDF — both personal charts, the complete method for every remedy, the next eight antardashas with dates, when both people's periods ease together, a weekly routine, and "Your questions — plain answers". It never advises separation, does not predict wealth or children, and offers no guarantee.

That is our whole approach to grah kalesh nivaran — cause, timing and remedy from both charts, so a family moves forward on understanding rather than on blame. For families searching 'grah kalesh ke upay' or 'ghar me kalesh ke upay', these two matchings are the most directly connected:

Frequently asked questions

Why does griha kalesh happen?

In jyotish the causes usually sit in three places: harsh planets affecting the 4th house (home) and the 2nd house (speech), a pressured Moon (mind), and difficult periods running together for family members — Sade Sati, Dhaiya, or an antardasha of Rahu or Saturn. Most kalesh is not one person's fault but a mismatch of temperament and timing that eases as periods change.

What should we do if there is constant conflict at home?

First, stop placing the blame on one person. Then begin three habits — the dusk lamp every day, shared meals a few times a week, and a pause before speaking. Worship Ganesha, Shiva and Hanuman. Have the charts of the two central family members read together, so you know whose period is heavy and until when.

Which mantra should I chant for peace in a quarrelling home?

No single mantra fits every home. For constant misunderstanding, 'Om Gam Ganapataye Namah'; for a heavy mind, 'Om Namah Shivaya'; for anger and hard phases, 'Om Ham Hanumate Namah' with the Hanuman Chalisa. The planetary seed mantras are for the member in whose chart that planet is heavy now. Chant 108 times daily for at least 43 days.

Does Sade Sati increase quarrels at home?

Sade Sati can bring fatigue, a heavier load of duty and more silence, and that shows in a home's mood. During Kantak Dhaiya (Saturn 4th from the Moon sign) the effect on domestic happiness is most visible. It does not weigh equally on everyone — for Taurus, Libra, Capricorn and Aquarius Moon signs it is usually lighter. Hanuman Chalisa and daan on Saturday give support.

Whose chart should be read in a saas-bahu conflict?

Both. The relationship belongs to two people, so one chart gives half a picture. The Saas–Bahu matching reads four temperament kootas worth 21 points — not 36 gunas — along with both Moons, each one's house in the other's chart and the current periods. Remedies come out for both women, without blaming either.

Should I keep a griha kalesh nivaran yantra at home?

We do not recommend yantras. Gomati chakras, sindoor tricks and salt in corners are also not jyotish remedies. The classical remedies are direct: mantra japa, puja, daan, seva and gentle speech. They are harmless, simple, and bring the family together — which works better than any object placed in a corner.

How long do remedies for peace at home take to work?

There is no fixed number of days and no guarantee. Tradition asks for at least 43 days of regular japa. Many families feel the atmosphere soften within the first few weeks, because keeping a shared routine brings people closer. The larger shift usually comes when a member's difficult antardasha or Saturn's stage changes.
