Effective Rahu-Ketu Remedies — Dosha, Dasha and Shanti

Rahu and Ketu are there to be understood, not feared. Here is what the two shadow planets do in a chart, how their dashas unfold, and which simple, harmless remedies give the mind steady support.

Few words in Indian astrology cause as much worry as "Rahu" and "Ketu". Someone hears that a Rahu dasha has begun, or that their chart has Kaal Sarp yoga, and a dozen fears move in overnight. Yet the real purpose of jyotish (Vedic astrology) is to explain, not to frighten. Rahu and Ketu are part of every birth chart, just like the Sun, the Moon or Saturn. In some placements they bring restlessness and confusion. In others, the very same planets lift a person to unusual heights, open doors abroad and give a rare depth of understanding.

In this guide the Kundli Milan Jyotish team explains Rahu and Ketu from the ground up: what they are, what they tend to give in each bhava (house of the chart), what grahan yoga and Kaal Sarp yoga mean, how long their mahadasha (major planetary period) lasts, and which remedies anyone can follow at home. One honest word first. The title says "effective" because that is what people search for. The truth is that no remedy is guaranteed. A remedy done with regularity and faith gives support, and joined with your own effort it makes a hard phase feel lighter.

What Rahu and Ketu Are — The Shadow Planets

The Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn can all be seen in the sky. Rahu and Ketu cannot. They have no physical body, which is why they are called chhaya graha (shadow planets). Even so, Vedic astrology counts them among the navagraha (nine planets), because their position can be calculated precisely and their influence on a chart is clearly observed.

Two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's

Seen from the Earth, the Sun travels a full circle through the sky each year. That path is the ecliptic (the Sun's apparent route). The Moon's path is tilted against it by about five degrees, so the two paths cross at two points. Where the Moon crosses from south to north is Rahu, the north node. Where it crosses from north to south is Ketu, the south node. In Sanskrit these are the Moon's two pata (crossing points).

These two points are the two ends of one straight line. So Rahu and Ketu are always exactly opposite each other — 180 degrees, or six signs, apart. If Rahu is in Aries, Ketu is in Libra. If Rahu sits in the first house, Ketu sits in the seventh. This never changes. In a North Indian chart Rahu is usually written "Ra" and Ketu "Ke".

Why eclipses are linked to them

Eclipses happen only near these two points. On a new Moon, when the Sun and Moon stand together close to Rahu or Ketu, the Sun is eclipsed. On a full Moon, when the Sun and Moon stand opposite and that line lies close to the Rahu-Ketu axis, the Moon is eclipsed. That is why the ancient seers tied eclipses to Rahu and Ketu.

The story of the churning of the ocean

The Puranas tell how the nectar of immortality rose from the churning of the ocean, and how the asura Svarbhanu, in disguise, sat among the gods and drank it. Lord Vishnu severed his head with the Sudarshana chakra, but having tasted the nectar he could not perish. The head became Rahu and the body Ketu. Astrologers read a deeper meaning here. Rahu is a head without a body — desire that is never satisfied. Ketu is a body without a head — experience searching for direction. One says "I need more", the other says "what is the point of all this?". A balanced life sits between the two voices.

Rahu's Nature — Desire, Confusion and Sudden Turns

Rahu is a planet of increase. Wherever it sits, it magnifies hunger in that area of life — the urge to have more and reach further. Pointed in a good direction, that hunger makes an ordinary person extraordinary. Pointed badly, it produces restlessness, haste and bhrama (confusion, seeing things wrongly).

  • Desire and ambition — big dreams, a pull towards the new, a wish to stand apart from the crowd.
  • Confusion — things appearing larger or smaller than they are; trusting the wrong person at one time, doubting without reason at another.
  • Sudden events — change without warning. Sometimes a sudden opportunity, sometimes a sudden obstacle.
  • Foreign lands and the unfamiliar — life abroad, other cultures, new technology, unconventional paths.

An old saying runs "Shanivat Rahu" — Rahu behaves much like Saturn. Just as Saturn tests patience slowly, Rahu tests a person by placing them face to face with their own desires. Rahu owns no sign of its own, so it gives results like the lord of the sign it occupies, coloured by whichever planet sits with it. This is the key to understanding a Rahu dasha.

Ketu's Nature — Detachment, Spirituality and Sudden Breaks

Ketu is a planet of reduction, of turning within. In whatever house Ketu sits, a person feels a certain distance from that subject — as if it were already familiar. This distance is not weakness. Often it is exactly what keeps a person out of tangles in which others stay caught.

  • Vairagya (detachment) — less attachment to things, a natural liking for simplicity.
  • Spirituality — a leaning towards meditation, mantra and moksha (release from bondage).
  • Sudden breaks — the mind suddenly leaving a job, a place or a habit, or a long pattern ending without notice.
  • Intuition — sensing things without reasoning them out; a feel for hidden subjects.

A second saying runs "Kujavat Ketu" — Ketu behaves much like Mars: quick, sudden and direct. Like Rahu, Ketu largely takes on the results of its sign lord and its companions. In tradition, Rahu and Ketu are given the seventh aspect and also the fifth and ninth.

On exaltation (the sign where a planet is strongest) the classical authorities differ for Rahu and Ketu. Some place Rahu's exaltation in Taurus and Ketu's in Scorpio; others choose Gemini and Sagittarius.

What People Mean by "Rahu-Ketu Dosha"

People often say "there is a Rahu dosha in my chart". The classical texts, however, have no single fixed yoga called "Rahu dosha". The phrase is used loosely when Rahu or Ketu disturb an important house or planet — for example, sitting with the Moon and unsettling the mind. Whether they help or trouble a chart depends on a few factors.

  1. The house — the third, sixth and eleventh are upachaya (houses of growth). Here Rahu often does well: courage, success in competition, new sources of income.
  2. The sign lord — if the lord of Rahu's sign is strong, Rahu also gives its results with more balance.
  3. Companions — the company or aspect of a benefic like Jupiter steadies Rahu and Ketu considerably.
  4. The dasha — their influence shows most clearly when their own mahadasha or antardasha is running.

So no one should make a firm statement just from "Rahu is sitting here". The same kind of Rahu gives one native a large career abroad and another a period of drifting. The difference comes from the rest of the chart.

Rahu and Ketu in the Twelve Houses

Because Rahu and Ketu are always opposite, they form an axis across the chart. There are six possible axes: 1-7, 2-8, 3-9, 4-10, 5-11 and 6-12. The two houses on that axis carry a lifelong pull — Rahu's hunger on one side, Ketu's distance on the other. The table gives only the broad direction; real results change with the sign, its lord, the planets involved and the dasha.

HouseIf Rahu is hereIf Ketu is here
1 (self, temperament)Wish to stand out, big dreams, at times confusion about identitySimplicity, an inward nature, underrating one's own needs
2 (wealth, speech, family)Strong drive to earn, quick speech, changes in dietRestraint or bluntness in speech, some distance from the family circle
3 (courage, effort)Initiative, success in communication and technology — a good placementHesitation in taking the first step, less closeness with siblings
4 (home, comfort, mother)Changing homes, a home abroad, an inner sense of unrestFeeling a stranger even at home, liking a simple house
5 (intellect, learning, children)Original thinking, risky decisions, hunger for new knowledgeDeep, research-minded intellect; interest in mantra and meditation
6 (illness, debt, rivals)Victory over opponents, ahead in competition — a good placementA spirit of service, inner strength to face difficulties
7 (spouse, partnership)High expectations from the partner, a partner from a different backgroundA sense of emotional distance, sacrifice in the relationship
8 (sudden events)Sudden changes, interest in hidden subjects and researchIntuition, a deep spiritual search
9 (fortune, dharma)Questioning tradition, long journeys, a path of one's ownLiving dharma from within, seeking a true teacher
10 (career, action)Fast rise at work, wish for recognition, large institutionsWish to change work, seeking meaning more than position
11 (gains, income)New income streams, a wide network — a good placementLess attachment to gains, some desires falling away
12 (expenses, loss)Rising expenses, links abroad, restless sleepMeditation, a leaning towards moksha — a good placement

Wherever Rahu sits, Ketu is directly opposite. With Rahu in the tenth, Ketu is in the fourth — the mind runs towards work and finds too little time for home. The answer is balance, not fear: restraint in Rahu's subject, and a little more warmth towards Ketu's. The 1-7 axis touches relationships most directly, because the first house is "me" and the seventh is "my partner". With Rahu in the first, a person pushes their own identity forward while Ketu in the seventh makes the partner's needs harder to see; with Rahu in the seventh it is the reverse. That is why this axis is worth reading in family matching — though it never decides anything on its own.

Grahan Yoga — Rahu or Ketu with the Sun or Moon

When the Sun or the Moon shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu in a birth chart, tradition calls it grahan yoga (eclipse combination). The name sounds heavy, but the meaning is simple. As an eclipse covers light for a while, the qualities of that planet can sometimes feel clouded. It is not a permanent darkness.

The Moon with Rahu or Ketu

The Moon signifies the mind. With Rahu, the mind is crowded with thoughts — vivid imagination, but restlessness too, and small matters can start to feel large. The good side is that such people are often creative; writing, art and new plans hold their interest. With Ketu, the mind folds inward — loneliness even in a crowd, hesitation in expressing feelings, but a natural ease with meditation.

The Sun with Rahu or Ketu

The Sun signifies confidence and the father. With Rahu, confidence can swing — very high at one time, suddenly low at another — with an intense wish for recognition. Relations with the father or senior authorities need patience. With Ketu, a person is less drawn to rank and fame and sometimes underrates their own ability.

How strong the grahan yoga will be

  • Distance in degrees — if Rahu and the Moon share a sign but are far apart in degrees, the effect is considered mild.
  • The Moon's strength — a waxing Moon of the bright fortnight holds up much better.
  • Jupiter's aspect — softens this combination a great deal.
  • Timing — the effect shows most when the dasha or antardasha of the Moon, Sun, Rahu or Ketu is running.

The greatest remedy here is a routine that steadies the mind — sleeping on time, morning sunlight and a few minutes of japa (mantra repetition) daily. For the Moon, offering water on a Shivalinga on Mondays and chanting the Moon's beej mantra (seed mantra) is considered helpful.

"Om Shram Shreem Shraum Sah Chandramase Namah"

For the Sun, offer water to the rising Sun and chant the Sun's beej mantra.

"Om Hram Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah"

If restlessness lasts long, if sleep will not come, or if low mood settles in, please see a doctor. Jyotish remedies go alongside a doctor's treatment, never in place of it.

Kaal Sarp Yoga — A Later Tradition, Not a Reason for Fear

Today the greatest fear spreads under the name Kaal Sarp yoga. So let us state the truth first: Kaal Sarp yoga is not found in the ancient texts. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Brihat Jataka, Saravali and Phaladeepika describe no yoga by this name. It is a later tradition that became widespread only in the last century. The old texts do describe a separate "Sarpa yoga", formed by malefic planets (planets of harsh nature) in the kendra houses — but that is not Kaal Sarp. Still, many families follow this tradition, so it is worth understanding, so that understanding can replace fear.

How Kaal Sarp yoga is said to form

When all seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — fall on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, leaving the other half of the chart empty, this tradition calls it Kaal Sarp yoga. Rahu is the serpent's mouth and Ketu its tail. Twelve names are given by the house Rahu occupies, from the first house onward: Anant, Kulik, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhachud, Ghatak, Vishdhar and Sheshnag.

When Kaal Sarp is not counted — the cancellations

Even astrologers who follow this tradition do not count the yoga, or treat it as very mild, in many situations.

  • If even one planet lies outside the Rahu-Ketu axis, a full Kaal Sarp does not form. Some call this "partial", but many practitioners do not count it at all.
  • If a planet shares a sign with Rahu or Ketu but its degrees take it outside the axis, the yoga is considered weak or cancelled.
  • Jupiter is strong in a kendra (houses 1, 4, 7, 10), or aspects the lagna (ascendant, first house) and the Moon.
  • The lagna lord is strong and placed in a kendra or a trikona (houses 1, 5, 9).
  • Rahu sits in the third, sixth or eleventh house — counted among Rahu's good placements.

Most important of all: this pattern appears in a great many charts, and many of those people have lived ordinary, happy and successful lives. There is no need to panic on hearing "you have Kaal Sarp". What is needed is to read the whole chart, the dasha and the transits together.

Simple remedies for those who follow the tradition

  • On Mondays, offer water on a Shivalinga and chant one mala of "Om Namah Shivaya".
  • Daily japa of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
  • Shiva puja with devotion on Nag Panchami — this too is part of the tradition.
  • The beej mantras of Rahu and Ketu, given in the remedies section below.

Some people arrange a special puja at a pilgrimage place. That is a matter of personal faith, not a requirement, and there is no need to spend heavily out of fear.

Rahu and Ketu Dasha — 18 Years and 7 Years

In the Vimshottari dasha system (a 120-year cycle of planetary periods), each planet rules for a fixed span. Rahu's mahadasha lasts 18 years and Ketu's 7. The sequence is: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. So Rahu's dasha always follows Mars and is followed by Jupiter; Ketu's follows Mercury and is followed by Venus.

The dasha running at birth is decided by the Moon's nakshatra. If the Moon was in Ardra, Swati or Shatabhisha, life begins in Rahu's dasha; in Ashwini, Magha or Mula, in Ketu's. The further the Moon had travelled through that nakshatra, the more of that dasha is counted as used up before birth.

Rahu mahadasha — how 18 years unfold

Rahu's dasha is long, so it is never a single colour. Inside it run nine antardashas (sub-periods), each with its own flavour. The pace of life often picks up — new places, new work, new people. A Rahu in the third, sixth or eleventh house, or one whose sign lord is strong, can give good progress. In practice, look at the lord of Rahu's sign: if Rahu is in Capricorn, see Saturn; in Pisces, see Jupiter. Where Rahu is placed with difficulty, be careful about confusion, haste and the wrong company.

OrderAntardashaApproximate lengthUsual flavour
1Rahu in Rahu2 years 8 months 12 daysNew direction, early ups and downs
2Rahu in Jupiter2 years 4 months 24 daysUnderstanding and guidance, often relief
3Rahu in Saturn2 years 10 months 6 daysA test of effort and patience
4Rahu in Mercury2 years 6 months 18 daysBusiness, communication, cleverness
5Rahu in Ketu1 year 18 daysSudden change, turning inward
6Rahu in Venus3 yearsComfort, relationships, art
7Rahu in Sun10 months 24 daysRecognition; matters of father or authority
8Rahu in Moon1 year 6 monthsRestlessness of mind or emotional change
9Rahu in Mars1 year 18 daysEnergy and courage; avoid haste

The formula for an antardasha: years of the mahadasha × years of the sub-period planet ÷ 120. For Saturn within Rahu: 18 × 19 ÷ 120 = 2.85 years, about 2 years 10 months. Days are approximate, and the "usual flavour" is only a direction. The same formula gives Rahu's antardasha in other dashas — 3 years inside Venus's 20-year dasha, for example. So when someone says "Rahu's time is running", ask first: mahadasha or antardasha? The weight is very different.

Ketu mahadasha — 7 years

Ketu's dasha is short but deep. People often look inward — what is truly necessary, what can be let go. Sometimes an old pattern ends suddenly and a new understanding takes its place. The period supports spiritual practice, travel, research and service. Its antardashas come in this order (approximate):

  • Ketu in Ketu — 4 months 27 days
  • Ketu in Venus — 1 year 2 months
  • Ketu in Sun — 4 months 6 days
  • Ketu in Moon — 7 months
  • Ketu in Mars — 4 months 27 days
  • Ketu in Rahu — 1 year 18 days
  • Ketu in Jupiter — 11 months 6 days
  • Ketu in Saturn — 1 year 1 month 9 days
  • Ketu in Mercury — 11 months 27 days

After Rahu's dasha comes Jupiter's, and after Ketu's comes Venus's. The months around a change of dasha (dasha sandhi, the junction) can feel unsettled, so take big decisions slowly then.

Transit — Backward Motion, About 18 Months in a Sign

In gochar (transit, the planets' present movement), Rahu and Ketu have two special features. First, they are always treated as vakri (moving backward): where other planets go Aries to Taurus to Gemini, Rahu and Ketu go Gemini to Taurus to Aries. Second, they stay about 18 months in each sign and complete the zodiac in about eighteen and a half years. Their transit is slow, but its effect lasts.

The classical rule counts Rahu and Ketu favourable in transit through the third, sixth and eleventh signs from the Moon sign (the Moon's sign at birth). When transiting Rahu passes over the natal Moon, the mind may feel restless or crave a big change for about a year and a half. When Ketu passes over it, the mind may feel indifferent and turned inward. These phases pass; recognising them and keeping a steady routine is the sensible response. Transit is strongest when it matches the natal dasha, so transit alone is no reason to worry. The current signs of Rahu and Ketu can be checked in any reliable panchang.

Remedies — Simple, Harmless and Rooted in Jyotish

Now the most important part. One honest point again: no remedy is guaranteed. "Effective" here means remedies tested over generations, rooted in scripture and tradition, and completely safe. Done with regularity, patience and faith, they steady the mind and give support through a hard phase. Your own effort and judgement matter just as much.

General rules for japa

  • 108 repetitions a day — one mala (rosary).
  • At least 43 days, without a break.
  • The same time and place each day, so the mind settles faster.
  • Fast only if your health allows. If a doctor has advised against fasting, do only the japa.
  • If a day is missed, do not feel guilty — simply begin the count again.

Rahu's beej mantra

The most direct remedy for Rahu is its beej mantra (the short root mantra of the planet). Starting on a Saturday is considered good, and evening suits Rahu.

"Om Bhram Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah"

Tradition gives 18,000 repetitions for a full Rahu anushthan (formal vow of practice), best done with guidance from a knowledgeable person. One mala a day can be done comfortably by anyone at home.

Ketu's beej mantra

Ketu's beej mantra can be started on a Tuesday or a Saturday. Whichever time of day you can keep every day is the best time.

"Om Sram Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah"

Tradition gives 17,000 repetitions for a full Ketu anushthan. One mala a day is a good beginning.

Worship of Goddess Durga for Rahu

Tradition holds worship of Goddess Durga to be the simplest path to calm Rahu. The Goddess is shakti (divine strength), and Rahu's confusion is cut by clear sight and inner strength.

"Om Dum Durgayai Namah"

  • On Friday or Saturday evening, light a lamp and chant one mala of this mantra.
  • During Navratri, recite the Durga Kavach.
  • Respect for the daughters and women of the house is also part of worshipping the Goddess.

Worship of Lord Ganesha for Ketu

Ketu is traditionally linked with Lord Ganesha, the Vighnaharta (remover of obstacles), who steadies the intellect. Ketu's sudden detachment and loss of direction are balanced by his worship.

"Om Gam Ganapataye Namah"

  • On Wednesdays, offer durva (sacred grass) to Ganesha and chant one mala.
  • Worship on Sankashti Chaturthi each month; fast only if your health allows.

Worship of Lord Shiva — for both Rahu and Ketu

Lord Shiva wears a serpent around his neck and the Moon on his head. So tradition regards Shiva worship as the most generous remedy for Rahu-Ketu, for the Moon, and for those who follow the Kaal Sarp belief.

"Om Namah Shivaya"

  • On Mondays, offer water on a Shivalinga and chant one mala of this panchakshari (five-syllable) mantra.
  • Shiva puja on Pradosh (the evening of the thirteenth lunar day), and regular abhishek during Shravan.

The Mahamrityunjaya mantra

When the mind is anxious, or there is worry about someone's health in the family, tradition holds the Mahamrityunjaya mantra to be the greatest support. It does not feed fear; it builds trust.

"Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam. Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat."

One mala every morning, or 11 times if time is short. Where health is a concern, chant it alongside a doctor's treatment, never in place of it.

Hanuman Chalisa

Lord Hanuman is called Sankatmochan (the remover of troubles). In times of Rahu's confusion and fear, reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is a very widely followed practice. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, recite it once or seven times. When time is short there is a brief mantra.

"Om Ham Hanumate Namah"

Saturday daan — within your means

Since Rahu behaves like Saturn, Rahu's daan (charitable giving) is traditionally made on Saturdays.

  • Black sesame — a small quantity to someone in need, or at a temple.
  • A blanket — in winter, for a poor person, a labourer or someone without a home. This is considered good for both Rahu and Ketu.
  • Food — feeding someone who is hungry.
  • Within your means — never borrow or upset the household budget to give. A little, regularly and from the heart.

Give without pride, and treat the receiver with respect — that is the real rule of daan.

Serving those in need

Rahu is linked with people society often overlooks — sanitation workers, labourers, migrants. Speaking to them with respect and helping them is one of the truest Rahu remedies. Ketu is linked with sadhus, the sick and elderly people living alone. Listening to an elderly person, caring for someone who is ill, putting out water and grain for birds and animals — these are considered actions that keep Ketu calm.

Conduct — the most important remedy

The greatest remedy for any planet is to live its good qualities and avoid its harmful side.

  • For Rahu — distance from lies, deceit, intoxicants and "get rich quick" schemes. Sleep on every big decision for one night, and check information before believing a rumour.
  • For Ketu — a few minutes of meditation daily. Share your feelings with family instead of pushing them down, and do not break relationships abruptly; if your mind turns away, wait a few days and then talk.

Gemstones — only on expert advice

Hessonite (gomed) is considered Rahu's gemstone and cat's eye (lahsuniya) Ketu's. We do not advise wearing them on your own. If you wish to wear one, do so only after a knowledgeable astrologer has examined your full chart. A gemstone increases a planet's strength — and the gemstone of a planet that needs calming can have the opposite effect. With Rahu and Ketu this matters even more, because they already magnify results. Mantra, daan and service carry no such risk.

Hanging lemons and chillies or floating things away in a river are totke, not jyotish remedies, and we do not suggest them. A genuine remedy is simple, can be done at home, and harms no one.

A simple weekly routine

There is no need to do everything at once. Choose one or two remedies and keep them faithfully for 43 days. A little, done steadily — that is where a remedy's real strength lies.

Rahu-Ketu in Marriage and Family — Why Both Charts Matter

The influence of Rahu and Ketu does not stop with one member of a household. When two people share a home, the planets in both charts touch each other's lives. Imagine a husband whose chart has Rahu with the Moon, with a Rahu antardasha running now — his mind is restless and small things irritate him. His wife's chart has Ketu with the Moon — instead of speaking, she goes quiet. Neither is at fault. Their present periods and the nature of their minds are simply different. Once this is understood, patience takes the place of quarrels.

So remedies too should be chosen after looking at both charts — Shiva and Moon worship for the partner with Moon-Rahu, Ganesha worship and meditation for the one in a Ketu dasha, and one simple shared practice for both, such as a Shiva mantra chanted side by side on Monday evenings. The Kundli Milan Jyotish team designed its matchings with exactly this thinking.

  • Husband–Wife Kundli Milan — for a married couple, it reads both charts for Rahu and Ketu with the Moon (the mind), the seventh house, the present dasha and Saturn's transit, and gives separate and shared remedies for both, with a weekly routine.
  • Griha Shanti Kundli Milan — for any two members of a household, such as a parent and child or two brothers. It reads both charts for Rahu-Ketu and the Moon, the fourth house (peace of the home), Pitru dosha and Kaal Sarp (as tradition), the present dasha and Saturn's transit, and suggests remedies for peace at home.

Both reports are prepared from each person's date, time and place of birth. After payment, the full result opens on the site right away, and the full report comes as a PDF — each person's own chart, the complete method for the remedies, the weekly routine, and "Your questions — plain answers". To be honest: our reports do not predict money, children or exam results. They read both charts for relationships, the mind, the present period and the remedies for these.

Before a wedding the question is different. There the Kundli Milan looks at the 36 gunas of ashtakoot (the eight-fold matching), Manglik dosha, Nadi and Bhakoot. Rahu and Ketu are not part of ashtakoot, and no match should be stopped on the basis of Rahu-Ketu placement alone. Where a difficulty appears, understanding and remedies show the way forward.

Frequently asked questions

Do Rahu and Ketu always give bad results?

No. Rahu often does well in the third, sixth and eleventh houses — courage, success in competition, new sources of income. Ketu in the twelfth or ninth house can bring spirituality and peace of mind. The result depends on the sign they occupy, the condition of that sign's lord, the planets with them and the dasha now running. There is no reason to fear the names alone.

What should I do if my chart has Kaal Sarp yoga?

First, let go of the fear. Kaal Sarp yoga is not in the ancient texts; it is a later tradition. It appears in many charts, and in many situations the same tradition treats it as cancelled — for instance when a planet lies outside the axis or Jupiter is strong. If you follow the belief, keep to simple home remedies such as Monday Shiva puja, the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and the beej mantras of Rahu and Ketu.

How many days and how many times should I chant Rahu's mantra?

Chant Rahu's beej mantra, given in the remedies section above, 108 times a day — one mala — for at least 43 days without a break. Starting on a Saturday and chanting in the evening are considered good. Sitting at the same time and place helps the mind settle. Tradition gives 18,000 repetitions for a full anushthan, which is best done with guidance from someone knowledgeable.

Is it safe to wear hessonite or cat's eye?

Not on your own. If you wish to wear a gemstone, do so only after a knowledgeable astrologer has examined your full chart. A gemstone strengthens its planet, and the gemstone of a planet that needs calming can have the opposite effect. Rahu and Ketu already tend to magnify results, so extra caution is needed here. Mantra, daan and service carry no such risk.

How do I know when my Rahu mahadasha will come?

Your chart is calculated from your date, exact time and place of birth, and the Vimshottari dasha sequence follows from it. The dasha begins from the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Rahu's dasha always follows the 7-year Mars dasha and lasts 18 years, after which Jupiter's dasha begins. Ketu's dasha follows Mercury's and is followed by Venus's.

Does a person born with grahan yoga have a hard life?

That cannot be said. Grahan yoga simply means the qualities of the Sun or Moon can at times feel clouded — restlessness of mind, or confidence that rises and falls. The distance in degrees, the Moon's strength and Jupiter's aspect change its effect a great deal. Monday Shiva puja, the Moon's mantra, morning sunlight and a regular routine give good support.

Does any remedy work for certain?

No remedy is guaranteed — not ours, not anyone else's. People search for "effective" remedies, but the truth is that a remedy done with regularity, patience and faith gives support, and your own effort and good judgement matter just as much. Be careful of anyone who promises certain results or frightens you into an expensive ritual.

Why look at Rahu and Ketu in both partners' charts?

Because the atmosphere at home comes from both people's minds and both people's present periods. If one chart has Rahu with the Moon and the other is running a Ketu dasha, each temperament shifts in its own way. Reading the two charts together shows which remedy suits whom, and what the couple can do together. That is what the Husband–Wife Kundli Milan examines.
