Mars in marriage
Manglik Dosha
A chart is called Manglik when Mars stands in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house reckoned from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus. The South-Indian reading adds the 5th.
Manglik with Manglik — the dosha cancels
This is the most-asked question in matchmaking, and the rule is plain: when both charts carry Mangal dosha, it is neutralised on both sides. When only one carries it, the dosha stands and remedies apply.
Both Manglik
Mutually cancelled. On this count the match stands clear.
Only one Manglik
The dosha stands. Read its severity and apply the classical remedies.
Neither
The question does not arise.
Which house Mars sits in — and what each one means
Mangal dosha forms when Mars occupies one of these houses. But each house reads differently — the 7th is the sharpest, the 2nd the mildest. And this is checked not from the Lagna alone but from the Moon and from Venus as well; a flag from any one of the three counts. That is why a reading taken from the Lagna alone is usually half a reading.
| House | Mars there means | Which tradition |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A sharp, energetic temperament — quick to anger at times; patience in speech keeps harmony with the spouse. | North & South |
| 2 | Sharpness in speech and care needed with family finances — gentle words and keeping accounts together settle it. | North & South |
| 4 | Care for peace at home and harmony with in-laws — take household decisions together; changes of residence may be a little more frequent. | North & South |
| 5 | A little impatience in matters of children and romance (South Indian reckoning) — patience and affection settle it. | South only |
| 7 | Directly on the spouse's house — some delay in marriage and a quick temper; patience, dialogue and Mangal remedies ease it (the strongest effect). | North & South |
| 8 | The 8th is the house of the marriage bond's depth (mangalya) — Mars here asks for patience through sudden changes and care with money; Hanuman worship and mutual trust keep it steady. | North & South |
| 12 | The 12th is the house of intimacy and expenses — watch spending and make time for each other; openness keeps it balanced. | North & South |
When the dosha stands cancelled
The shastra names remedies alongside the doshas, and keeps two things clearly apart — some rules cancel the dosha outright, others only reduce its severity. Treating them as one is a serious mistake: it reads Manglik charts as clean when they are not.
| When | In which signs | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Mars in its own sign | Aries / Scorpio | cancels |
| Mars exalted | Capricorn | cancels |
| Mars in the 7th, in its own sign | Aries / Scorpio | cancels |
| Mars in the 7th, in these signs | Cancer · Leo · Sagittarius · Pisces | cancels |
| Both Manglik | in the groom's and the bride's charts | mutually cancelled |
These do not cancel — they only reduce. The shastra keeps the two apart:
| When | Why | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Mars in a dual sign | Gemini · Virgo · Sagittarius · Pisces | severity down |
| Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars | Jupiter is a benefic | much reduced |
| Mars with the Moon | softness of mind | moderate reduction |
| Mars with Mercury | the restraint of intellect | softened |
And this one does not reduce the severity — it raises it:
| When | Why | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn aspecting Mars | Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra 27.31 | severity rises |

Cancelling within the chart itself
Often Mangal dosha is weakened or made inactive by the rules of its own chart, without needing the other — Mars in its own or exaltation sign, the drishti of Jupiter or Venus, or its placement in certain signs. Our matching checks these cancellation factors too and names the one that applied.
Not every Manglik chart carries an active dosha. Severity, cancellation and the other chart — do not decide without all three.
