Varna
Mind and spiritual level
The twelve rashis fall into four varnas — Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. Water signs are Brahmin, fire Kshatriya, earth Vaishya, air Shudra. The guna is awarded when the groom's varna equals or stands above the bride's. This is a level of temperament, not caste.

Vashya
Mutual attraction and sway
The twelve rashis fall into five classes — quadruped, human, watery, wild and insect. Sagittarius and Capricorn are split in half, so the Moon's degree is read too. This says who will naturally hold sway over whom.

Tara
Each other's fortune and health
The count runs both ways — from his nakshatra to hers and from hers to his — then divided by nine. Vipat, Pratyak and Vadha are inauspicious; Janma, Sampat, Kshema, Sadhaka, Mitra and Atimitra are auspicious. One and a half gunas for each direction.

Yoni
Natural compatibility
The twenty-seven nakshatras carry fourteen animal yonis — horse, elephant, sheep, serpent, dog, cat, rat, cow, buffalo, tiger, deer, monkey, mongoose, lion. The same yoni takes all four gunas; the seven enemy pairs (cow-tiger, serpent-mongoose and the rest) take none.

Graha Maitri
Friendship of minds
How the lords of the two Moon-signs regard each other — friend, neutral or enemy — read from both sides, because the relationship is not always mutual: the Moon holds Mercury a friend while Mercury holds the Moon an enemy, and such a pair scores 1.

Gana
Match of temperament
The nakshatras fall into three ganas — Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa. The same gana takes all six gunas; a Deva groom with a Manushya bride six, a Manushya groom with a Deva bride five; Deva-Rakshasa one; Manushya-Rakshasa none. Even a zero has classical rules of cancellation.

Bhakoot
Love, children and prosperity
The distance between the two Moon-signs. A 6-8, 2-12 or 5-9 gap is held to be a dosha. But if the rashi is the same, the nakshatra-lord is the same, or the rashi lords are the same planet or friends, the dosha stands cancelled.

Nadi
Health and the joy of children
The nakshatras fall into three nadis — Aadi, Madhya, Antya. Different nadis take all eight gunas; the same nadi takes none. This is the heaviest koota of the Ashtakuta, and its zero is not bought off by the guna count.
