Ashtakuta · 8 Gunas
Nadi
Health and the joy of children
The nakshatras fall into three nadis — Aadi, Madhya, Antya. Different nadis take all eight gunas; the same nadi takes none. This is the heaviest koota of the Ashtakuta, and its zero is not bought off by the guna count.
What a zero means
A zero in Nadi comes from both sharing one nadi, and it is the heaviest dosha of the Ashtakuta. With the same Moon-sign and different nakshatras the shastra reads it as partially weakened, not erased. Full cancellation needs a qualified astrologer.
How it is counted
- Take the nadi from each nakshatra — Aadi, Madhya or Antya. Nine nakshatras to each nadi.
- Different nadis take the full 8; the same nadi takes 0 — that is the Nadi dosha.
- Even on the same nadi there are three classical exemptions — one Moon-sign with differing nakshatras, one nakshatra with differing Moon-signs, or one nakshatra with differing padas. Any of them eases the dosha — 4 out of 8. The shastra reads it as weakened, not erased.
Where we differ from the common practice
On the same nadi, where any of the three classical exemptions applies — one rashi with differing nakshatras, one nakshatra with differing rashis, or one nakshatra with differing padas — we award half the koota, not all of it. Many calculators give the full 8 here, but the shastra calls this state “weakened”, not “cancelled”. So we give 4 — and we still show the dosha in the report.
Its weight in the verdict
Besides the 36 gunas, this koota also has a separate voice of its own, weight 1.3. A zero here is not covered by the guna count — which is exactly why it is weighed apart.
| Voice | Weight |
|---|---|
| The 36 gunas — all together | 1.0 |
| Nadi — its own separate voice | 1.3 |
| Bhakoot — its own separate voice | 1.1 |
| Gana — its own separate voice | 0.9 |
| Dashakuta — Rajju and Vedha | 0.6 |
| The extended kootas | 0.6 |
| The other 33 voices | 24.2 |
| Total — 39 | 29.7 |
Our verdict is built by weighing 39 voices, whose weights total 29.7. All thirty-six gunas together are one of them — about 3.4% of the whole verdict. The rest is decided by the 7th house, the Navamsha, the Saptamsha, Vimsopaka, Jaimini, the dasha timing, Manglik and the others. That is why this report never tells anyone to call off a marriage over a low count.
