Ashtakuta · 6 Gunas
Gana
Match of temperament
The nakshatras fall into three ganas — Deva, Manushya, Rakshasa. The same gana takes all six gunas; a Deva groom with a Manushya bride six, a Manushya groom with a Deva bride five; Deva-Rakshasa one; Manushya-Rakshasa none. Even a zero has classical rules of cancellation.
What a zero means
A zero in Gana comes from a Manushya-Rakshasa pairing and is held serious. But three classical exemptions apply — one Moon-sign, one nakshatra-lord, or friendly rashi lords — and any one of them cancels it.
How it is counted
- Take the gana from each nakshatra — Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa.
- Same gana scores 6; a Deva groom with a Manushya bride 6, a Manushya groom with a Deva bride 5; Deva with Rakshasa 1; Manushya with Rakshasa 0.
- On a zero, three exemptions are checked — one Moon-rashi for both, one nakshatra-lord, or rashi lords in natural friendship. Any one of them cancels the Gana dosha.
Where we differ from the common practice
1 and 5 are both “not full”, and they are worlds apart. Deva with Rakshasa scoring 1 is the sharpest clash of temperaments; Deva with Manushya is very nearly a full match — and there the order counts: a Deva groom with a Manushya bride 6, the reverse 5. Our report does not read the two alike, nor dismiss either as “didn't get 6”.
Its weight in the verdict
Besides the 36 gunas, this koota also has a separate voice of its own, weight 0.9. A zero here is not covered by the guna count — which is exactly why it is weighed apart.
| Voice | Weight |
|---|---|
| The 36 gunas — all together | 1.0 |
| Nadi — its own separate voice | 1.3 |
| Bhakoot — its own separate voice | 1.1 |
| Gana — its own separate voice | 0.9 |
| Dashakuta — Rajju and Vedha | 0.6 |
| The extended kootas | 0.6 |
| The other 33 voices | 24.2 |
| Total — 39 | 29.7 |
Our verdict is built by weighing 39 voices, whose weights total 29.7. All thirty-six gunas together are one of them — about 3.4% of the whole verdict. The rest is decided by the 7th house, the Navamsha, the Saptamsha, Vimsopaka, Jaimini, the dasha timing, Manglik and the others. That is why this report never tells anyone to call off a marriage over a low count.
