Ashtakuta · 1 Guna
Varna
Mind and spiritual level
The twelve rashis fall into four varnas — Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya, Shudra. Water signs are Brahmin, fire Kshatriya, earth Vaishya, air Shudra. The guna is awarded when the groom's varna equals or stands above the bride's. This is a level of temperament, not caste.
What a zero means
A zero in Varna is not held a fault — it is the lightest koota, worth a single guna. If the groom's varna falls below the bride's the point is not awarded, but the shastra does not call it a bar; the remaining kootas weigh far more.
How it is counted
- Take the varna from each Moon-sign — Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are Brahmin; Aries, Leo and Sagittarius Kshatriya; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn Vaishya; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius Shudra.
- If the groom's varna is equal to or above the bride's, 1 guna; below it, 0.
Where we differ from the common practice
This is one of the two kootas that read order — swap bride and groom and the score can change (Vashya is the other). It is also the lightest koota, one guna out of thirty-six. Our report does not count a zero here as a dosha at all.
Its weight in the verdict
This koota has no separate voice of its own. It is counted inside the single “36 gunas” voice — which means Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni and Graha-Maitri, all five, arrive together as that one voice.
| Voice | Weight |
|---|---|
| The 36 gunas — all together | 1.0 |
| Nadi — its own separate voice | 1.3 |
| Bhakoot — its own separate voice | 1.1 |
| Gana — its own separate voice | 0.9 |
| Dashakuta — Rajju and Vedha | 0.6 |
| The extended kootas | 0.6 |
| The other 33 voices | 24.2 |
| Total — 39 | 29.7 |
Our verdict is built by weighing 39 voices, whose weights total 29.7. All thirty-six gunas together are one of them — about 3.4% of the whole verdict. The rest is decided by the 7th house, the Navamsha, the Saptamsha, Vimsopaka, Jaimini, the dasha timing, Manglik and the others. That is why this report never tells anyone to call off a marriage over a low count.
